Chapter 22: Her Chair
I took the stairs two at a time, and I still arrived too late to prepare my face.
My mother stood in the middle of the lobby with a rolling suitcase and a round metal tin held against her chest.
She was five feet tall, in her good navy coat, and she looked at the marble floor.
"Eomma," I said.
"Paralegal," she said.
"I'm sorry."
"I flew all night and sat next to a man with a trombone. Do not apologize for a paralegal."
She put the suitcase down and looked at me properly.
She looked at the cardigan, the white sneakers, and the hair I cut myself.
Her mouth began to shake, and she pressed it flat with one hand.
"Your cousin sent me that video in a text six years ago," she said.
"You saw it?"
"I watched it forty times. I watched it until my eyes were dry."
"You never said."
"You never said," she answered, as if it were the same sentence.
"I thought if I said, you would have to be sad. You were already sad. I thought, let her be a paralegal. Let her have one thing that is easy."
