"Off the ladder," Bex said.
"I'm nearly done."
"You're five months pregnant and you're eleven feet in the air. Off the ladder."
"I'm pregnant, Bex. I'm not a soufflé."
"Off the ladder, Madam President, or I'm calling your husband."
It was Friday, November twentieth, a year later, at a quarter to eleven at night.
Install week.
All twelve windows were papered over again, glowing at the edges.
Inside Window Seven, my reindeer flew in their line over the tin skyline, rebuilt for good this time, with new legs and new eyes.
The lead reindeer still turned its head on the watch motor from the third floor.
The third floor had never asked for it back.
I came down the ladder.
Slowly, because Bex was watching, and because I couldn't see my own boots anymore.
We'd found out in August.
Felix had read the test in our bathroom and sat down on the edge of the tub and didn't say anything for a full minute.
Then he'd said, "No silences," and told me he was terrified, and happy, and that he'd already looked up ladder harnesses.
