Chapter 11: The Pool Pays Out

The next morning, Gus collected on the betting pool in front of the whole studio.

He stood on a chair in the open floor with a clipboard and a sandwich bag full of cash.

"Day thirteen," he announced. "The pool was on how long Roxie Kettering would hold on to the marriage before dropping it."

"I haven't dropped it," I said.

"Correct," said Gus. "She left for a day and came back. Under the rules I wrote, that's a pickup, not a drop. So everyone who bet 'never' wins."

He looked down at his clipboard.

"That's one person. Me."

The studio booed.

I was standing at the back with a coffee in a paper cup, and Lorne was beside me, with his hands in his pockets and a very small smile.

We had come in separately, and we were both wearing the same clothes as yesterday.

Nobody had said anything about that yet.

Jessamine was at her desk.

She had been very quiet since I came back.

She smiled at me, and I smiled at her, and I felt a small cold spot under my ribs that I couldn't name.

"One more item," Gus said, and got down from the chair.

He had a tablet under his arm.

"Yesterday somebody posted a photograph of a private company form to the internet. I'd like to look at it with everyone."

"Gus," Lorne said.

"Trust me," Gus said.

He put the tablet up on the big screen over the QA corner.

It was the picture. Form 11-B, the back side, in Lorne's capitals.

"Here is what I noticed," Gus said, and pointed with a pen. "The photo was taken on a flat surface, from above. In the lower corner of the picture there is a coffee sleeve."
