Chapter 17: Inspection

At ten to eight the next morning I drove onto Marsh Point in my mother's Camry.

Forty townhomes stood in rows along it, half of them framed in raw yellow wood.

I'd drawn every one of them.

Somebody had put up a white tent by the model unit.

Under it there were doughnuts in pink boxes, a coffee urn, and about thirty people in nice casual clothes.

The buyers.

Young couples, mostly. A man with a toddler on his shoulders. Two older sisters in matching visors.

A banner on the tent said WELCOME HOME, MARSH POINT FAMILIES!

Beverly stood in the middle of them in a cream pantsuit and a white hard hat with her name on it.

Mason was beside her, handing out coffee.

I parked behind the inspector's city truck and got out.

Cooper got out of the passenger side.

He'd been on my mother's porch at six-thirty with two coffees, and I'd let him carry the drawings.

The first person to see me was Mason.

He stopped with a coffee halfway to a woman's hand.

The second person was Beverly.

Her smile didn't move, but she put her doughnut down.
