Chapter 6: Dani on the Bed

I did not sleep in the box room.

On Sunday afternoon I was in my own bedroom, packing everything I owned into three cardboard boxes.

A woman I worked with at the clinic had a spare room for $650 a month.

She had texted me the address the second she heard.

I was taping the last box when the door clicked, and Dani walked in.

She closed it behind her.

She wasn't crying.

Her eyes were clear and dry, and she sat on the edge of my bed and crossed her ankles.

"You're taking the blue lamp," she said. "Leave it. It's the only one that works with that outlet."

I kept taping.

"Nonna gave it to me," I said.

"Nonna gave you a lot of things, Bee." Dani picked at a thread on my quilt. "You never did anything with any of it."

"What do you want, Dani?"

"I don't want anything. I just came to say you shouldn't take it personally."

"Take what personally?"

"All of it." She smiled, the smile she saved for my father. "Somebody in a family has to be the one everybody waits for. You're just not that person. You're the one who goes first and comes back with the food."

I stood up straight.

"That's a terrible thing to say."

"It's a true thing to say." She turned the gold ring on her finger. "It looks better on me than it ever did on you, doesn't it?"

I had never worn it.

Nonna had put it in my hand on her last day, and my father had taken it for safekeeping.

Footsteps sounded on the stairs, and my mother's voice floated up, humming.
