Chapter 22: Out

The St. Louis County jail did not know what to do with a police chief in its lobby at six in the morning.

He stood at the front desk in his overcoat and gold braid, and he said four sentences to the deputy behind the glass.

The deputy behind the glass was the gray-mustached one from Thursday.

He read something on his screen, and he looked at me, and he looked at the chief, and he said, "I'll get the paperwork started."

"Start it fast," the chief said.

We waited an hour and forty minutes.

I sat on a molded plastic chair in the lobby with Zuri asleep on my chest.

Dutch sat on one side of me and Nik on the other, and Dirk stood by the door with his arms crossed.

Mason had gone to get coffee and come back with eleven.

Nobody spoke.

At seven-forty the inner door buzzed.

A deputy came through it first.

Behind him came my brother, in his own gray sweatshirt and jeans that hung off him.

He carried a clear plastic bag of belongings in one hand.

I stood up so fast the baby woke.

Cyrus stopped in the doorway.

He looked at the men in the lobby, and at the chief in his gold braid.

Then he looked at me.

I could not move.

He crossed the floor in six long steps.

He had always been big, and he was less big now.
