Chapter 11: Moonrise

The three of them came to the bunkhouse at moonrise, before the run, and none of them could make himself leave.

Dub had come to say goodnight, and Arlo had come to bring me a thermos, and Hoyt had come because I was there.

The woodstove glowed red in the corner.

Someone had spread quilts on the floor in front of it.

I knelt on them in my nightshirt with three big men standing over me.

"The pack runs the rim in twenty minutes," Hoyt said.

"We should go."

"You should," I said, and I pulled the nightshirt off over my head.

Nobody went.

Dub made a strangled noise.

"Lord God in heaven," he said.

"All right. All right, we've got twenty minutes."

"Eighteen," said Arlo, and began to unbutton his shirt.

I got down on my hands and knees on the quilt, facing the fire, with my hair hanging.

I heard boots hit the floor.

I heard a belt buckle and a zipper, and the soft sounds of three men undressing in a hurry.

Dub knelt behind me first, and I heard him wince.

"Hip," he muttered.

"Give me a second, darlin'."

He pulled a folded quilt under his bad knee and settled, and his hands came down on my hips.

They were rough and sure.

Arlo stretched out on his back on the quilt beneath me.

He slid his shoulders in between my knees, so that his face was under my belly.

"Mi vida," he said, looking up at me.

"Lower."

I lowered my hips, and he put his mouth on my clit.

I cried out and my arms buckled.
