Chapter 20: The Night Before

Anders's POV

On the night before the Blood Moon, I stood guard on my own gate as a man with no rank.

It was easier than I had expected.

Nobody asked me for orders, and I had no plans to give any.

I was the third wolf on the left of the East Gate post, and my Luna walked the line behind me with her hands in her coat.

Torben came off the road at ten with his collar turned up and snow on his lashes.

He waited until the relief had gone down the stairs.

"I spoke to the scout in the cells," he said.

"He talks?"

"He's frightened. Not of us. Of whoever's waiting for him when this is over." Torben looked from me to Marit. "He gave me a time."

"The second bell," Marit said.

Torben's mouth fell open.

"How did you..."

"It was in Hallvard's letter," she said. "Anders read it to the whole hall. It named the second bell."

Torben shut his mouth.

"I was on the road that day," he said. "I only heard it was read."

I said nothing, because the letter was not the only place she had heard it.

I was learning when she gave me part of a thing and kept the rest until she could carry it.

"There's more," Torben said. "The rogue chief has met Hallvard twice. Once at Midsummer, at the old logging camp. He was paid in the gate's key hours."

"Key hours?"

"Two hours when the bar is off the gate and the watch is stood down. Hallvard's selling the east wall for two hours." Torben swallowed. "The scout says the chief has been promised more than that. The Alpha's seat, with Hallvard under him. And the pack's women."
