Chapter 23: Head of the Table
The long table in the ranch kitchen was set for seven, and the chair at the head had been moved.
Fionn stopped in the doorway.
Joxe's chair, the big carved one with the arms, now stood at the middle of the long side.
The head of the table was empty, and a plain chair stood there with a folded wool blanket on the seat.
"No," Fionn said.
"Sit," said Amona.
"Amona, I..."
"I said sit."
She was already in her place at the foot, her tin cup at her elbow.
"I am seventy-nine years old. I do not argue about chairs."
Mikel pulled it out for him.
His face was entirely solemn, and his eyes were laughing.
Fionn sat.
The wool blanket was warm and smelled of cedar.
He understood, with a rush of heat to his face, that it was the one from the sheep wagon.
Siobhan carried in the stew pot.
She set it in front of him, ladled the first bowl, and put it into his hands.
"Eat," she said.
Mikel took the seat on Fionn's right.
Joxe sat down on his left and cleared his throat.
