Chapter 12: Close the Door

I brought the tea and I closed the door.

Hugh Cullen lay propped on three pillows with the tube in his side and his gray buzz cut flat on one side.

He looked ten years older than the man I had met on the floor, and exactly as hard.

I set the cup in his hand.

He took one sip and made a face.

"Dishwater," he said. "Thank you."

I checked his dressing and his drain and his pressure.

He let me, and watched my face the whole time.

"You were fast, in that room," he said. "I've thought about that."

"Thirty years on the docks I've watched men get hurt," Hugh said. "Most times, somebody stands there and screams."

"Somebody has to hold the wrap," I said.

"Somebody does," Hugh said, and set the cup on the tray.

"Sit down, hon. I want to tell you something, and then I want to see what you do with it."

I sat down.

"Your man didn't shoot me," Hugh said.

The room was very quiet.

I could hear the drain, and a gull outside, and my own pulse in my ears.

"I'm sorry?"

"Nikos Galanis. He did not shoot me."

"I saw him," I said. "He had the gun."

"He had it. He took it out of a boy's hand about two seconds after the boy used it."
