Chapter 20: Greek Christmas
My father arrived at Yiayia's Christmas table with a kielbasa under one arm and a pan of pierogi under the other.
Yiayia met him at the door in her good black dress and a gold cross the size of a thumb.
She looked up at him, which was a long way, and then at the pan.
"What is this?"
"Potatoes and cheese," my father said. "In a dumpling."
"Potatoes," said Yiayia, and took it from him. "Come in. You will sit by me."
He sat by her.
He did not say a word through the soup, and neither did she, and they stared at each other with great respect.
Dot kicked me under the table.
Across from us, Yianni sat with his sleeves pushed up and his hands flat on the cloth.
They were callused now, split along the knuckles, with rope burn across both palms from eight weeks of dock floors.
He ate three helpings of lamb.
Nobody remarked on it, and everybody noticed.
Nikos sat on my left.
My father had not looked at him once.
