Chapter 15: The Cousin's Arm
Dario straightened up from the table with his empty hand open at his side.
His left shoulder was on fire.
The stitches had pulled on the run from the car, and he could feel the shirt sticking to him, wet and warm.
"Good boy," said his father. "Sit by me."
Dario did not sit.
He was looking at Ben, who stood with Ignazio's pistol behind his ear and his face the color of bread dough.
Ben was looking back at him with eyes gone wide and dark and wet, and there was no hatred in them.
There was none at all.
Dario had spent five years imagining the moment Ben learned the truth.
In every version Ben looked at him the way he had on the stand.
This was worse.
Ben looked at him, the full horror finally sinking in.
"Papa," Dario said. "Let him go."
"After." Gaetano slid the carving knife along the cloth toward him, handle first, as gently as passing the salt. "Do it here, with the family. For once I'd like to see it. Then you're mine again."
Ignazio's thumb moved on the hammer.
Dario heard the click, small and distinct, and something in him that had been bolted down for five years tore loose.
Ben dropped.
He went straight down out of the chair, with no warning, and the gun followed empty air.
The shot went into the portrait of Dario's grandmother and took off a corner of her black dress.
Dario was already moving.
He crossed the corner of the table in two steps and took Ignazio's gun wrist in his right hand.
He turned it back over his own forearm and drove it down across the edge of the chair back.
The bone broke with a sound.
Ignazio screamed.
The pistol went skidding under the sideboard.
Dario hit him once with his good elbow, in the face, and he went down on the carpet with his arm bent the wrong way.
