I Sent the Mafia Heir to Prison, and He Came Out Wanting Me novel · Chapter 19 of 24

Chapter 19: The Lobby

The lobby of the Dirksen Federal Building was exactly as cold as Ben remembered.

Marble floor, brass doors, a flag on a pole, and a line of people shuffling through a metal detector with their belts in their hands.

He had walked through it for forty-one days with a paper bag.

Now he walked through it again at four minutes to nine on Wednesday morning.

He wore a clean white shirt Greta had ironed on the hood of a car, and he kept his hands out where everyone could see them.

Dario came in behind him.

He did not touch Ben's back or his arm.

He stayed a step to the left, close enough that Ben could feel the warmth of his coat.

A small black disk lay in his breast pocket against his heart.

"You okay?" Dario said under his breath.

"No."

"Good. Me neither."

Ben nearly laughed.

By the elevators a woman in a navy suit was waiting beside two uniformed deputies.

She was tall and grey-haired and she had the face of a person who read every report to the end.

"Joel Kosinski?" she said.

"Ben Archer," Ben said. "Both."

"I'm the chief deputy for this district." She looked at Dario. "And you're Mr. Bellacosta. You're on parole."

"I'm with him."

"That isn't a legal category."

"It's the only one I want."
