Chapter 9: You Smiled

Ben had just pulled the second batch when somebody knocked on the warehouse door, politely, three times.

He stood very still with the peel in his hands.

Dario had left at noon with a clean shirt and no explanation.

Nobody else knew this place existed.

The knock came again.

"I can hear you breathing, baker," said a pleasant voice. "I'm alone. Open up or I'll let myself in."

The three bolts were thrown.

Ben picked up a cleaver off the grandmother's table.

The door rolled back on a lean man in a charcoal suit with a clipped black beard and no tie.

He stood in the sunlight with his hands visible and his head tilted.

"Ignazio," he said. "Dario's cousin. Put the knife down, I brought pastry."

He held up a white cardboard box tied with string.

Ben didn't move.

"Papa had a tracker put on the car the day Dario walked out," Ignazio said conversationally. "I'm told he doesn't know. Nobody tells Dario anything he can't keep to himself."

"What do you want?"

"To be kind." He set the box on a crate and came a step closer. "My cousin is at dinner with my uncle right now. He's been told to bring you to the house next Sunday. He said yes."

Ben felt afraid.

"You're lying."

"Of course I am. I lie all day." Ignazio smiled. "Ask him. Watch his face when you do."
