The family's hall was full when we arrived.
Men who had eaten at Ada's table stood beside Carlo.
Others left a wide aisle for Matteo.
Gina walked near Carlo, her throat bare where my mother's pearls had been.
I went in with Matteo and Ada.
Nobody tried to stop me.
That almost frightened me more than a guard would have.
The oldest elder asked Matteo whether he had lost control.
"Of what?" Matteo said.
"Your wife. Your house. Your people."
I recognized the gold ring on the elder's little finger.
He had watched Gina thrown out of Ada's dining room and said nothing.
Now he stood near Carlo with his arms folded.
Matteo noticed where I looked.
"Let him talk," he murmured.
