Gina held Ada tightly enough to hurt her.
Ada met my eyes and lifted one eyebrow.
She was telling me she could stand.
"Move back," Gina said.
The oldest elder did not move quickly enough for her.
She pressed Ada forward until his hand left the table.
Ada's cane dragged across the floor.
I could see she had kept her grip on it.
Gina knew how to threaten people who still cared about her.
She had never learned what to do when they stopped pleading.
"You can have the door," I said.
"I want a car."
"Carlo brought one. Ask him for the key."
He stood across the hall, close to the other exit.
Gina turned her head to find him.
He was already deciding whether he could leave alone.
"Carlo," she said. "Tell them to move."
