Chapter 15: The House

The living room went quiet the way it had on the night of the dare.

Jace was still in the charcoal suit pants, with a grey sweatshirt over them.

He hadn't shaved.

He didn't look toward the hallway.

He didn't know if I'd come.

Tanner leaned back in his chair at the head of the tables.

"Look who it is," he said. "Mr. Loyalty. Pull up a chair, buddy. We were just getting to old business."

A few guys laughed.

Most of them didn't.

Jace didn't sit down.

He stood at the far end of the tables, across from Tanner, with forty guys between them.

"I've got old business," he said.

The house president, a big redheaded senior in a Brewers hat, looked from one to the other and set down his gavel, which was a ketchup bottle.

"Floor's yours, man."

"Don't," Tanner said. "Seriously. Nobody wants a sad speech."

"You gave one Friday," Jace said. "Mine's shorter."

He put his hands in the pocket of his sweatshirt.

He took them back out.

I'd never seen him not know what to do with his hands except that first night in his studio.

"I told him to end it or I'd tell her," he said. "He cried in my apartment for an hour and swore it was over."

He looked around the tables.
