I Swore to Kill the Prince I Guard novel · Chapter 14 of 24

Chapter 14: The Council Chamber

Evander could have killed all four of them.

They were the Chancellor's picked men, in black and silver, with halberds, and the corridor was narrow.

He looked at Florian instead.

The prince had come up out of sleep onto his elbow with the quilt around his waist and no spectacles.

He stared at the halberds.

"Evander," he said.

Evander crossed the room and put Maren's dagger into the prince's hand, hilt first, and closed his fingers around it.

"Keep it for me," he said.

"If I fight, they'll say it was true."

"Don't you dare go with them."

"Read every page they put in front of you today," said Evander.

"Every one."

Florian's mouth shook, and then it set.

Evander let them take him.

They put iron on his wrists, and the cold of it reminded him of nothing so much as the sword belt.

He walked out between them in his shirtsleeves and bare feet.

The Privy Council chamber was full by the second bell.

Every seat at the long table was taken, and lords stood three deep along the walls.

They had set a stool in the middle of the floor for Evander, with a halberd on either side.

The Master of Coin wouldn't look at him.

Piers stood at the far wall in guard blue, his face the color of tallow and one hand locked on his sword hilt.
