Chapter 16: The Wax

Piers found the right key for the chains on the third try.

"His Highness told me to find you at dawn and not to ask questions," he said, sawing at the lock.

"He told me about the order.

"He told me about the oath.

"He told me, God help me, about the Chancellor.

"I'd like to say I didn't believe him."

The iron fell off Evander's wrists.

"But I've been losing at dice to Basil Thorngate's secretary for three years," said Piers, "and he always has the exact card.

"I thought it was luck."

Evander rubbed his wrists.

"It wasn't luck."

"No.

"It was a man who knew my roster."

Piers grinned, but it was a sick grin.

"Come on.

"The Regent goes to the chapel for the King's morning mass.

"He stays on his knees for exactly an hour, because he wants it noticed.

"I have forty minutes of that hour left."

They went up through the guardhouse in the grey light.

Every guard they passed in the yard was one of Basil's.

Piers lifted a lantern, gave a tired salute, and said, "Cell inspection, orders of the Regent," in the voice of a man bored past endurance.

They let him through.

"That's the whole trick," said Piers, when they were round the corner.

"Nobody looks at a bored man."

The Chancellor's rooms were unlocked on the outside and guarded within by one yawning page, whom Piers sent for breakfast with a coin.
