Chapter 21: Minus Tide
The sea had gone out farther than I had ever seen it.
The sand lay flat and silver and wet to the foot of Haystack Rock, and the gray light of the winter morning slid across it.
The tide pools stood open, full of anemones and small crabs.
Under the cliff face, where the rock fell in dark ledges to the sand, a cave mouth showed.
It had been under water for a year.
Henrik led me into it by the hand.
"We have a short while," he said. "Then the water turns."
"Then we'd better be quick," I said.
He turned.
He backed me against the wall of the cave, which was cold and wet and rough with barnacles.
He took my face in both hands.
"Say it again," Henrik said.
"I love you."
His eyes closed.
Then his mouth was on mine, and it was a hard, hungry kiss with no patience in it, tasting of salt and cold air.
I had on a long coat over nothing but my boots.
Henrik opened it with one hand.
The air bit at my skin, and I gasped, and he laughed under his breath.
"You came out here with nothing under it," he said.
"You said ten past eight."
"I did."
His hands cupped my breasts, hot against the cold, and his thumbs found my nipples.
"They're hard," he said into my neck. "They're pink with the cold. I want my mouth on them."
He bent and took one, and I put my head back against the stone.
The gulls were screaming out over the rock.
I heard the sea muttering far off, and the drip of water in the cave, and my own shaking breath.
"Henrik," I said. "Now."
"Already?"
"I've wanted you since last night. I watched you draw me."
"God," he said.
He dropped to his knees.
He pushed my legs apart and pressed his mouth between them, and the shock of his heat in that cold went through my whole body.
He ate me, fast and rough, with his hands gripping my hips, the way he never did in the shop.
