Chapter 29: The Empty Grave
"Then come," Livio said. "Saturday. Before the table."
Orsola put her glasses back on.
"Not to visit it," she said. "To dig it up."
The lobstermen stopped chewing.
"I'm not leaving my name on a stone for another twenty-eight years," she said. "If I'm coming back from the dead, I'm doing it once. In front of everybody."
We drove south on the first Thursday in August.
Lina slept from Bangor to Boston and screamed from Boston to New York.
Orsola sang to her in Italian in the back seat, an old song about a goat, and Lina stopped screaming out of pure surprise.
"My mother sang me that," Livio said.
"Your grandmother sang it to me," Orsola said. "I sang it to you every night until you were six."
He didn't say anything for a long time after that.
The cemetery was on a hill in the northwest of the city, under old oaks.
Livio had made the calls. Orsola had made a list.
By ten on Saturday morning there were forty people standing on the grass in the heat.
