Chapter 24: Two Wives
She walked down the bar.
No nurse.
No blanket over her knees.
Her hair was loose again, sun-streaked, and the pink was gone off her nose.
She took the stool in front of me and laid her sunglasses on the wood.
"I'll have the same as last time," she said.
I didn't move.
"Last time?"
"The Low Tide." She smiled. "It's good. I'll give you that. I nearly finished it."
Ball cap.
Gray hoodie.
A hundred-dollar bill, and no wait for her change.
"That was you," I said.
"You didn't even look up. You were three deep." She tilted her head. "That's the trouble with being the help, sweetheart. Nobody looks at you, and you don't look at anybody."
I picked up the bourbon.
I made her the drink.
I made it slowly, the way I'd made it for Lawton on my first Friday, because my hands needed something to do.
Over her shoulder, above the register, the little black camera Lawton had wired up sat on its bracket.
