Chapter 14: Behind the Prince
Wen Lanxi came to the Orchid Court before dawn with a ledger under his arm and no hawthorn in his mouth.
That was how Jiang knew it was bad.
"The Marshal's muster office lost its copy of the Stone Ford barge roll the week after the wound," Wen Lanxi said.
"So did the army archive.
The river bureau keeps its own book of who stood on which deck, because it bills the crown for the boats.
Nobody thought to burn that one."
He spread the page on the desk with two ink-stained fingers.
Lin sat up in his shirt with his hair in his eyes and read it standing.
"Twenty rowers," Lin said.
"Six men on the stern deck.
Household archers, in the Marshal's colors."
"Under one name," said Wen Lanxi.
"His captain of archers."
Jiang put his finger on the line.
He did not need the name, since he had never been told it.
He knew the title.
He remembered a stiff Liang bow held out to him in the Hanging Yard by a hand that would not stay still.
