Chapter 8: Caspian's POV

Caspian's POV

The north spur was empty.

I rode sixty miles with forty wolves behind me and found a dead fire pit, two collapsed tents and a rusted can.

Nobody had lived there in a year.

I got down from the saddle and stood in the cold with my hand on the horse's neck.

"The informant said a woman went in three days ago," my captain said.

"I know what he said."

"Shall I send riders to find him?"

"Yes."

I knew they wouldn't.

Alder had given me the informant's name himself, and Alder had never once given me a name that led anywhere.

I should have seen it long ago.

I stood on the ridge and looked at the empty hollow.

I thought of an old man in the village below the pass.

Last winter, half drunk, he had told me my Beta's men had been through twice that year.

"They asked everyone about a dark-haired woman," the old man had said. "Everyone who said yes, they took away."

I had thought it was zeal.

I had thought, he loves her too, and he's looking harder than I am.

I had thought it for three years.

The wind picked at my coat.

I thought back through the rogue camps we'd raided since the fire, and the rogues who had died in the raids.

It was a long list, and each of them had been shot in the back or the neck, and I had never asked why.

Under it all, I thought of a girl on her knees in my gravel yard with her left hand shut.
