Chapter 7: While He's Gone

The King rode out before the sun was up.

I watched from the gallery window with the housekeeper's cleaning cloth in my hand.

Forty wolves in black and silver filed out under the gate, and he led them without looking back.

I told myself I wasn't looking for his face.

Alder found me at the window an hour later.

"Come with me," he said. "I want you to see something."

He was so ordinary about it that I went.

He led me up the north stair to the Luna's wing and shut the door behind us.

The sun was in the room, and the veil was on the chair.

"Sit," he said gently.

"I'll stand."

"Fine." He crossed to the window and leaned on the sill, and his boots left a smear of red on the pale boards. "You've been very clever, Sorcha."

The floor tipped under me.

I did not move, because I was sure that if I moved I would fall.

"My name is Sel," I said.

"Is it?" He smiled, and it was a sad, soft smile. "I carried you out of that hall, you know. I held a wet cloth over your face and ran you down the quarry road with your father's blood on your dress. You don't forget a face you've done that for."

"I don't know what you mean."

"Your hand," he said. "Open it."

"No."

"I won't tell him." He sighed. "I haven't, have I? I've kept your secret for three days. I even brought you the wolfsbane."

My throat closed.

I had thought it was kindness.

"You knew in the truck," I said.
