Chapter 6: Palm

He sent for me after the elders had gone.

A guard walked me to the study and left me at the door.

The fire was lit, and the King stood at the window with his back to the room and a glass of untouched wine in his hand.

"Close the door," he said.

I closed it.

"Sit."

"I'd rather stand, my King."

"Then stand." He turned. "I'm not going to hurt you."

"I didn't think you would."

It was a lie, and a bad one.

He set the wine on the sill and came across the room until he was an arm's length away.

He did not reach for me.

He kept both hands where I could see them, the right one open, the white line across the palm, and he looked at my fist.

"Show me your hand," he said.

"No."

"I'm not asking to take it. I'm asking you to open it."

"It's mine," I said. "I can keep it shut if I want to."

His jaw worked.

"Why do you keep it shut?"

"It's an old injury. It's ugly."

"Is it a scar?"

I did not answer.

He lifted his right hand slowly and turned the palm to the firelight.

"I have one too," he said. "Here. You've seen it. You've looked at it five times since you came in."

"It's hard not to."

"The knife was a rite knife. It cuts once and the cut doesn't fade. It's the mark of the Moon Rite, and only two people in the kingdom carry it." He said it flatly. "One is standing in front of you. The other has been missing for three years."

My heart began to pound.

Under the wolfsbane, my wolf lay still.
