Chapter 24: Thanksgiving
I shut the door, because Kyle had asked me to, and then I switched on the light.
He blinked at it.
"You're not supposed to be here," I said. "You have a strap on your leg."
"It lets me go to a lawyer, a church and a grocery store."
"This is none of those."
"I couldn't find another place to ask."
He turned the dollar over in his fingers and put it carefully back in the tin.
"I wanted to ask about Thursday."
"What about Thursday?"
"Thanksgiving. Mom said you're having it at the new house. Lana's mother is coming."
"Her mother and her brother."
"I want to come."
I looked at him.
He was thinner than he had been, and his jacket hung off him.
His eyes were red from something that was not a lie.
"I was going to ask you somewhere nice," Kyle said. "A restaurant. But I don't have the money for a coffee, so I came here."
"You came into Lana's home."
"Where else was I supposed to wait?"
"Outside."
"I know." His voice cracked. "I know it's not right. I'm saying I'm sorry."
