Chapter 8: The Club
The sergeant told us at breakfast that the county club was holding an Army family evening on Wednesday.
"The colonel has to go," he said. "Half the board's friends will be there. If he doesn't show his face, they'll say he's hiding."
"I'm not hiding," Lorne said.
"Then you should go," I said, "on one cane."
He looked at me over his coffee.
"One," he said.
"One cane and my arm."
"Your arm," he repeated, in a tone that made the sergeant find something to do in the pantry.
That night I wore the only dress I owned, a dark green one from a church sale, and Lorne looked at me in the hall for so long that I checked my zipper.
"It's fine," he said. "You're fine. Get in the car."
The county club had a gravel court with lanterns and a ballroom full of dress uniforms and good dresses.
Lorne crossed the floor with one cane and my hand tucked into his elbow.
He walked slowly, but he did not drag the leg, and I saw three officers' wives watch his stride with open surprise.
A gray-haired officer in dress blues clapped his shoulder.
"Lorne," the man said. "I didn't think you'd make it."
"I didn't either, sir," Lorne said. "My therapist insisted."
All the faces turned to me.
