Chapter 9: What He Asks

Bree's fiancé came out of the ballroom white-faced and took her home himself.

She was still screaming when his car door shut.

Lorne did not say a word until the sergeant had driven us out through the club gates and the lanterns fell behind.

Then he said, "What did she mean?"

"I don't know," I said.

"Who you really are."

"I don't know, Lorne. I was two when they took me in." I looked at my hands in my lap. "They told me my parents died and nobody else wanted me. That's all I ever got."

"Did you ever ask for more?"

"In that house, you didn't ask."

He was quiet.

Then he reached over and took my hand, and he did not let go for the rest of the drive.

The sergeant said good night at the door and went to bed.

I followed Lorne into the library.

He sat down on the edge of the hospital bed and looked at me in my green dress.

"Come here," he said.

I stood between his knees.

"I told you something at the club," he said. "In front of an officer I respect."

"You did."

"I keep my word." He put his hands on my waist and turned me around. "Stand still."

He found the zipper at the back of the dress and drew it down, one inch at a time.

I felt his mouth follow it along my spine.

The first time we had torn at each other.

This time he took his time.
