Chapter 10: Lorne's POV

Lorne's POV

My father telephoned on Friday morning, while Wynne was still asleep in the library, with the sheet pulled up to her shoulder.

I took the call in the study with the door shut.

"I hear you were at the county club on your feet," The General said. "Good. Now listen to me."

"Yes, sir."

"Drop the Haldane matter."

I stood very still at the desk.

"Sir?"

"The police have a stolen car and no suspect."

"A colonel with a board in sixty days does not spend them hunting a developer's daughter."

"The board will not bend for you, Lorne. Not one inch."

"Someone drove away from me, sir. I lay there for forty minutes."

"And you will walk or you won't," he said. "That is what the board is for. Put the file in a drawer."

"No," I said.

He was quiet for a second.

"Then you have chosen your hill," he said, and hung up.

I put the phone down and looked at the file on the desk.

The plate number was the one Wynne had seen on her first morning here.

She had told me the rest in the dark last night, after Edgar's call, with her face against my shoulder.

A video, she said.

He says he'll have a video of me in the car.

I had held her until she slept, and I had told her it was a bluff.
