Chapter 8: Lies

Jude scrambled to put on pants, and I had seconds to become invisible.

I dove for the floor and found my T-shirt under his desk.

"Window," he whispered.

"It opens onto the porch roof. Go."

"I'm not climbing out in my underwear."

"Then hide in the closet."

"Jude!" Cam called.

"Are you up?"

"Up!" Jude called, with a voice almost normal.

"One minute!"

I scrambled into the closet between two flannel shirts and a winter coat, and pulled the door shut.

Through the slats I saw Jude drag on jeans and a T-shirt, check the bed, and fling the blanket flat.

My shorts were in the middle of the floor.

He kicked them under the bed.

He opened the door and stepped into the hall.

"Morning," he said.

"You look like you slept in a car," Cam said.

"Rough night."

"You sleep in jeans?"

"Cold."

"It's sixty-eight degrees, man. Come eat a bagel."

The voices moved to the kitchen.

I waited a full minute, then eased the closet open and crept out.

My shorts were under the bed.

I put them on, slipped into the hall, and hurried into the box room.

I messed up my bed, changed my shirt, and walked into the kitchen.

Cam was spreading cream cheese with great care.

Jude stood at the counter, pouring coffee with a hand that was not quite steady.

"Luce!" Cam said.

"You're up early."

"Couldn't sleep," I said.

"New place."

"You look flushed," Cam said, and squinted.

"Are you sick?"

"Hot," Jude said, too fast.

"The heat's weird in here."

Cam turned to him with the knife in his hand.

"The heat is off."

"Right," Jude said.

"That's why it's weird."

I took a bagel and shoved half of it into my mouth to stop myself from laughing.

Cam looked from one of us to the other, and I saw him decide it was nothing.

"Okay," he said.

"Weirdos. I'm going to shower. Then lab again at noon."

He left.
