Chapter 19: The Mill
I turned off my phone light.
Judd put his mouth to my ear.
"They'll smell me before they hear us," he breathed. "Wind's coming off the river. Stay downwind of me."
"I smell like you now."
"Then stay downwind of both of us."
We went along the side of the mill in a crouch.
The tin wall hummed under my palm.
At the back corner, one window had been painted black and the paint had flaked off in a strip at the bottom.
I lay down in the wet weeds and looked through it.
The inside of the mill was blazing white.
Work lights hung from every rafter.
The big saw was running, a blade taller than me screaming through a log on the carriage.
Five men were working it.
The yard foreman from the timber yard was running the carriage, in his timber company jacket.
The others were stacking fresh boards on a flatbed trailer at the far door.
The logs on the deck had a mark painted on their ends in blue.
