Chapter 14: The Frame
"My thumb was over the lens," I said. "I cut it so you wouldn't have to watch me shake."
"That is very considerate."
"I'm a considerate man."
VanBuskirk turned the tablet around.
The frozen frame showed an old man's face in a strip of wired glass.
"I called Victor Langhorn's lawyer at one o'clock," she said. "He says his client was home in bed."
"He wasn't."
"I know he wasn't. I have a face now." She lowered the tablet. "I also have a lawyer who will say a grieving man came to see where his partner died."
"He wiped a rail because he couldn't bear the blood."
"That's not a crime."
"Wiping evidence is. Proving he meant it is the work."
She kept the phone.
She gave me a receipt, and she told me not to go near him.
I was on Victor's stoop by six.
The doorman looked at my face, and then he looked at the sky, and he let me through.
