Chapter 25: Two Men on the Hoist
Every head on that roof turned to the back row.
My father walked up the aisle between the white chairs with his limp, slow, his union jacket open in the wind.
He stopped in front of me.
"Give me that," he said, and held out his hand for my phone.
He looked at the photo for a long time.
The clean white hard hat. The sandy hair. The hand.
"I was on the hoist base that night," he said, to the detective, not to the cameras. "Late shift. Everybody knows that. I've told it enough."
"I told about the man who came down."

The lawyer started to say something.
The detective held up one finger, and he stopped.
"Before the scream," Dad said. "Before Strahan. A kid in a brand-new white hat came to my cage. Said he was the project manager and had to check something on the crown."
"I sent him up myself."
"When Strahan came running in his tuxedo, the cage was still up top. I had to call it down. Empty."
