Chapter 26: Superintendent
"Me," I said.
"You."
"I'm a connector. I catch beams."
"You've been running that job since the day you wouldn't get out of the hoist." He shrugged. "I'd just like it on paper."
"I'd be your employee."
"You'd be my boss. On that site, everybody is. Including me."
I looked out at the city for a long time.
The rivers. The bridges. The black crown.
"I want all forty back," I said. "Same day. Same pay. Nobody reapplies."
"Done."
"Every bolt from that supplier comes out. Not the bad ones. Every one."
"Done."
"And you don't come up on my deck without a hard hat."
"I would never," he said, and that was when I knew he was serious.
On Monday, June twenty-ninth, I stood at the gate of Strahan Point at a quarter to six.
The city seal was off the padlock.
A new notice was taped to the fence. Work authorized for fastener removal and replacement only.
I had a white hard hat under my arm.
Superintendents wear white. It's been that way since before my grandfather.
I'd never wanted one in my life.
