Chapter 27: Kaylee's Girl
"Which hospital?"
She told me.
"I'm coming," I said. "Breathe. Don't hang up till I'm in the truck."
I went down the hoist in my harness with my white hat still on.
The foreman took the clipboard out of my hand without a word.
I called my father from the truck.
He was at the hospital before me.
I found him in the hallway outside labor and delivery, in his union jacket.
He had a vending machine coffee in each hand and no idea what to do with either one.
"They won't let me in," he said. "I'm not the husband."
"There is no husband, Dad. There's a man in county jail."
"They don't care about that. They care about forms."
A nurse came out and looked at us.
"Sister?" she said to me.
"Yes," I said, before I'd thought about it.
She took me in.
Kaylee was in the bed in a hospital gown with her curls stuck to her forehead.
No lashes. No makeup. No phone in her hand.
She saw me and started crying.
"You came," she said.
