The courtroom on the fifth floor of the City-County Building had wooden benches.
Every one of them was full.
Press in the front rows. Ironworkers behind them in clean flannel shirts, hard hats on their knees.
My gang sat together on the aisle.
Kaylee sat on my left, in a plain navy dress, her hands folded tight in her lap.
My father sat on my right.
Anson sat beside him.
Hayden's mother came in last, in black, in pearls.
She stood at the end of the aisle and looked at the bench behind her son's lawyer, where she was supposed to sit.
Then she walked past it and sat down behind Anson.
They brought Hayden in through a side door at nine.
Orange jumpsuit. No watch. His sandy hair cut short by somebody who didn't care how it looked.
He didn't smile. There was nobody to smile at.
The judge read the charges.
Involuntary manslaughter. Tampering with evidence. Fraud. Forgery. Reckless endangerment, two counts, for two slings on the thirty-eighth floor of Strahan Point.
