Chapter 18: Fourth Step
Megan arrived at noon with a casserole in one hand and the rolling pin in the other.
"I said I would bring both," she said, and put them on the penthouse counter. "I'm a woman of my word."
She looked around the kitchen at the long windows and the bay beyond them.
"You could land a helicopter on this island," she said.
I told her about the video, and the notice, and the vote on Monday.
She listened with her arms folded, which was how she listened to a patient who had lied about the beer.
"So he's a coward," she said.
"Yes."
"Who also stood in the rain with no umbrella." She held up a hand. "I looked it up. Forty-eight degrees."
"Megan."
"I'm saying I hate that I'm impressed." She pointed the rolling pin at me. "Here is what I think. A man who watches you get hurt and says nothing is a coward. A man who then stands in the rain is a coward who is trying. I'll take the second kind over Dylan's kind, who never once felt bad."
"That's not forgiveness."
"Nobody asked you to forgive him," she said. "I asked whether you'll let him earn it."
I looked at the casserole, which was tuna, and I thought about it.
"He has to do it himself," I said. "I'm not going to tell him how."
At two o'clock, Harrison called me from the car.
"Come to the office," he said. "Bring your sister if she'll come. I have to do something, and I'd like you to see it, if you want."
"What are you going to do?"
"The only thing I haven't."
