Chapter 16: A Seat at the Table
The note came Sunday morning in Peg's mailbox, on ranch letterhead, in square black handwriting.
It said: Two o'clock. My kitchen. Come alone.
It was signed with one initial, M.
Peg read it over my shoulder and said, "Well, you can't say no to that."
"I can say no to anything."
"Not to that handwriting, hon."
Orrin picked me up outside the diner at one and drove me out without a word.
Boone's white truck was gone from the yard.
I understood that Maxine had sent him somewhere, and that it had taken planning.
She was waiting at the long kitchen table with a pot of coffee and a plate of sliced pound cake.
She wore the pressed blue shirt and no apron.
"Sit," she said.
I sat.
She pushed the cake toward me, and I took a piece, because the last person who disobeyed her at that table was Dalton.
