Chapter 21: The Claiming
The spring was silver.
The full moon sat directly above the bowl of black rock, and the steam climbed toward it in slow white threads.
He set me down on the stone lip.
The cold air bit my skin and the water below was hot and still.
I stood naked in the moonlight with my wet hair down my back.
Tavish stepped into the water up to his knees.
He turned to face me.
He was naked too, and scarred, and bleeding a little from where I had bitten him.
He held out both hands.
"Ione."
"Don't talk," I said.
His mouth curved.
"Isn't that my line?"
"Tonight it's mine."
I stepped down into the water.
It rose over my ankles, my knees, my hips.
I waded to him through the steam and stopped so close that our bodies touched.
I looked up.
The moon was a white eye over his shoulder.
I put my hands on his chest, over the heart that had run into a feast hall to die for me.
"Tavish Rowe," I said.
My voice carried over the water.
"I'm not asking because I'm afraid. I'm not asking because I'm owed. I'm asking because I want it."
He stood absolutely still.
"I choose you," I said. "In this life and the other one."
"I ask you to claim me, with your teeth, under this moon."
"I ask you to make me your mate."
The steam curled around us.
"Say it again," he said, very low.
"Claim me."
His hands rose and closed on my face.
His thumbs shook against my cheekbones.
"I accept," he said.
