Chapter 16: One Question

Ilaria's POV

Somewhere over the black water, Dominic stopped pretending to read the folder in his lap.

"Say what you're thinking," I said.

"I'm thinking Gemma wants me to watch."

"Watch what?"

"Whatever she does to you." He shut the folder. "She wants me standing there, so I know what I picked."

"And what will you do?"

"Whatever you tell me to."

"That isn't an answer."

"It's the only one I've got that isn't a lie."

I looked at him across the narrow table.

His shoulder was freshly bandaged under his shirt, and there were gray circles under his eyes.

He hadn't slept in days, and it showed.

"Do you want to know what I wanted from you?" I said. "For five years?"

"Yes."

"One question."

He frowned.

"I told you my parents were dead to me. I said it at our first dinner, on a plate of your mother's lasagna. And you said, I'm sorry, and you passed me the bread."

"I remember."

"You never asked me one more thing about them. Not their names. Not what they were like. Not whether I missed them."

I held his eyes.

"I sat at your table for five years with a hole in me the size of a house, waiting for you to ask if it hurt."

He shut his eyes.

When he opened them, they were wet, and he did nothing to hide it.

"Five years in my bed," he said, "and I never knew your name. I told myself it was because you didn't want me to know."

"I didn't."
