Chapter 23: The Floor
The old investor stopped in front of Leigh and looked at her for a long time.
His gray eyes were not kind.
"Ms. Kincade," he said. "I have sent three offers to the owner of this casino and received three form replies."
"Sir," Leigh began.
"You told us the owner had agreed."
"I can explain."
"I have no doubt you can." He turned to me and inclined his head, stiffly, like a man who had not done it in years. "Ms. Ellington. I apologize for the evening. We will be leaving, and our lawyers will be contacting the gaming commission about the paper we were sold."
"Thank you," I said.
"Is the Aurora for sale?"
"Not to you," I said. "Not to anyone."
He almost smiled.
The three of them walked out through the front doors, and not one head in the Rotunda turned to follow.
They were all looking at Leigh.
She stood in her silver gown with the watch swinging on its chain, and for the first time since the ballroom, she looked small.
"You've lost," I said. "I'd like the watch."
She unpinned it from her gown with fingers that wouldn't work, and put it in my hand.
It was warm from her skin.
I closed my fingers on it.
Two patrolmen had come in from the lobby at the noise, hands on their belts, coffee still on their breath.
Reuben stepped forward and spoke to them quietly, in the voice from the dock.
"Officers, the theft report on locker one-fourteen is withdrawn. I have a new one. Impersonation of the owner, forged signatures, and two years of staff letters locked in a drawer. I'll sign it."
They looked at me.
"Do it," I said.
The taller patrolman took Leigh's elbow.
She flinched.
