Chapter 18: The Test
On Monday at ten past eleven, Chadwick walked onto the thirtieth floor without his jacket.
He came straight across the room past my two staff, who stopped typing, and he put his phone face up on my desk.
"I got this at 10:40," he said.
"Chadwick, I'm in the middle of a grant call."
"Hang up."
I looked at his face.
It was gray, and his jaw was set the way it had been the night he pledged his shares.
I told the school principal on the line that I would call back, and I ended the call.
"Read it," he said. "Please."
On the screen was a photo of a white plastic stick on a bathroom counter.
There were two pink lines.
Under it, from a number I did not know, someone had typed a message.
"Mr. Higginson. I didn't want to tell you like this. It was Chicago. I'm keeping it, whatever you decide. Please don't tell Mrs. Higginson yet. She'll hurt me."
I read it twice.
The room had gone very quiet.
Somewhere behind me, one of my staff slid her chair back an inch and rolled it out of the office with her foot.
The other followed her.
The door closed.
"I'm telling you before anyone else," Chadwick said. "Before my lawyer, before Eleanor. It's been twenty minutes. I walked down the stairs, and I haven't answered her."
"I see that."
"Nothing happened in that suite, Eileen. I drank half a glass of whiskey and I felt wrong, and I put myself in the shower for an hour with the water cold. She was on the bedroom floor in a towel, and I got her out of the room. That's all of it."
