Chapter 14: Tub
"Get up," I said.
He stayed on his knees with his arms around my hips.
"Axel. Get up."
He looked at me.
His face was a wreck, wet and blotched, the red handprint still fading on his cheek.
"Run a bath," I said. "A hot one. I'm cold, and I'm tired, and I'm still angry, and you're going to wash my hair."
He stared at me for a second.
Then he got up so fast he nearly slipped on the tile.
The bathroom upstairs had a tub the size of a small boat, deep and white, set under a window full of falling snow.
He ran the water as hot as it would go.
He found a bottle of something that smelled like cedar and poured half of it in.
Steam filled the room.
I stood in the doorway wrapped in his sweatshirt and watched him.
He tested the water with his wrist, twice.
"It's ready," he said.
I dropped the sweatshirt.
I stepped over the edge and sank in.
The heat closed over me from my ankles to my shoulders, and I made a sound I couldn't help.
My whole body ached.
My thighs, my back, the bruises coming up on my hips.
He stood at the side of the tub with his hands hanging.
"Get in," I said.
"Where?"
"Behind me."
He climbed in.
The water rose and sloshed.
He sat down at the back of the tub with his knees on either side of me.
I leaned back against his chest.
His arms came around me so carefully that it hurt.
For a minute neither of us said anything.
The snow ticked at the window.
I closed my eyes and felt his heart against my spine.
"My hair," I said.
He picked up the cup from the edge of the tub.
He wet my hair, slowly, tipping the warm water over the back of my head with one hand shielding my eyes.
