Chapter 17: Moved
"Dad pulled you out of the back seat," Nils said.
Nobody in the room moved.
The filter in the fish tank bubbled.
Somewhere down the hall a pump beeped twice and stopped.
"Say it again," Erik said.
His voice was very quiet.
"I was driving. Dad moved her."
Nils sat back down on the couch.
He did it carefully, a hand on the arm.
Then he told it.
He didn't look at either of us while he did.
He looked at the fish.
"The road was fine till Stony Point. Then it wasn't. The back end just went. I remember thinking, I know how to fix this. I'm a hockey player. I'm good on ice."
He laughed once.
"I turned the wrong way."
"The tree came in on my side. The dash came down on my leg. I couldn't feel it. I could see it, but I couldn't feel it."
"Erik was out. Blood on the window. I thought he was dead. I yelled at him for a long time."
He looked at me then, just once.
"You didn't make a sound. You were slumped over behind me, with your head against the glass. I could see you in the mirror."
My hand went to my eyebrow.
I didn't mean it to.
