Chapter 26: Visiting
I went on Thursday.
Erik wanted to come.
"He asked for me," I said. "Not you. Not yet."
"What if he says something that guts you?"
"Then I'll be gutted in a room with a guard and a vending machine. I've had worse."
He drove me up anyway and waited in the truck across the street with the engine running.
The Lake County jail was the same low brick building four blocks from the lake.
The same front desk.
The deputy at it was the young one from Erik's porch.
He recognized me.
He went red to the ears and buzzed me in without asking for my license twice.
The visiting room was small and yellow with four tables bolted to the floor.
Nils was already sitting at one.
He was in county orange.
His beard was trimmed short.
His prosthetic stuck out under the table at an angle, because there wasn't room for it.
He stood up when I came in.
The guard told him to sit.
He sat.
I sat across from him.
For a while neither of us said anything.
"You came," he said.
"You asked."
"I didn't think you would."
"Neither did I."
He put his hands flat on the table.
"I'm not going to ask you for anything," he said. "I want you to know that first. Not forgiveness. Not to see her. Nothing."
