Chapter 17: Terms Are Terms

I went back to the potting shed on day sixty-six.

The cot was where I'd left it, between the bags of peat and the old seed trays, and the nursery was dark.

I told myself I'd come for the seedlings.

I had come because the rule had been that I stayed where she could see me.

At midnight the shed door opened.

She stood against the stars in a gray coat, with Benji's flashlight dark in one hand.

"He thinks I'm at the pharmacy," Greer said. "I've got an hour."

I was on my feet before I knew it.

"What's happened? Did he find the recording?"

"No."

"Then what?"

"Nothing's happened." She shut the door behind her and set her back against it. "I wanted to be in a room with you."

I stared at her.

The woman at the town hall had held my cast in both hands and told me not to flinch.

This woman was looking at my mouth.

"Tell me the plan," I said. "Please. I've been going out of my mind."

"I can't."

"Greer."

"If I tell you, you'll do something. You'll change your face." She came a step closer. "One true thing a day, Asa. That's the rule, and I'll give you today's. I'm not going to break your hand."

I wanted to believe it more than I'd ever wanted anything.

That was how I knew to be careful.

"The loop wants you to love me," I said. "It always did. It made you propose eight times. How do I know this isn't it?"

"You don't."

"Then why say it?"

"Because it's true." She took the last step. "And because you've decided every kindness I've ever shown you is borrowed. Lie to me once and I take the other hand, remember? Tell me I'm wrong."

"I can't."

"Then you lied to me." Her fingers closed in my shirtfront. "Terms are terms."

She kissed me.

It wasn't the kiss from the greenhouse bed.
