Chapter 11: Pruitt Lane After Dark

That night Bowen came to Pruitt Lane with a gym bag and nothing else.

He stood on the porch in the cold with the bag in one hand.

"I left her the house," he said. "It's my father's. I'll get it back in court. But I couldn't sleep one more night in a room she's been breathing in."

Nathan opened the door wider.

"Come in."

"I'm not asking to stay."

"I know. Come in anyway."

Bowen came in.

He set the bag by the stairs, took off his boots and stood in the hall in his socks, huge and awkward in his own skin.

Nathan shut the door.

"I told you not while you were married," he said.

"You did."

"I was wrong about the reason."

Bowen's eyes lifted.

"I don't care about her signature," Nathan said. "I care that you were being used. That's over. You walked out of that house on your own legs, and nobody's lying to you."

"Nathan."

"So I have one rule. We don't say the big word until that paper is gone. Not you, not me. When she signs, or a judge does, we say it. Until then I only want to hear everything else."

Bowen swallowed.

"Everything else?"

"Everything."

Bowen crossed the hall.

This time he did not grab.

He took Nathan's face in both hands, tilted it and kissed him gently, with his lips barely parted, taking his time.

Nathan sighed into his mouth.

"Upstairs," he said.

The bedroom was dark except for the streetlight through the curtain.

Nathan sat on the edge of the bed and pulled Bowen between his knees by his belt.

Bowen stood very still, breathing hard.

"Tell me what you want," Nathan said.

"I don't know where to start."

"Take your jacket off."

Bowen shrugged it off, and it fell.

"The shirt."

The buttons were slow under Bowen's big fingers.

Nathan watched each one open.

Under it was a broad chest with a dusting of brown hair, and a long pale scar low on the ribs that Nathan had never seen.
