Chapter 7: Not While You're Married

Nathan did not answer with words.

He took hold of Bowen's soaked jacket and pulled him over the threshold.

Bowen stumbled into the hall and dripped on the floor.

Nathan shut the door behind him on the rain.

"Yes," he said.

Bowen stared at him.

"Yes, what?"

"Yes, I meant it. Every Thursday for a year. I put your coffee by my keyboard and drank it after you left so you wouldn't see my face."

Bowen made a sound in his throat.

It was a low, torn sound, and it went straight through Nathan's chest.

"Say it again," Bowen said.

"I meant it."

Bowen crossed the hall in one stride.

His hands came up and framed Nathan's face, cold from the rain and rough with calluses, and his thumbs pressed the corners of Nathan's jaw.

For one second they stood there with their breath mixing.

Then Bowen kissed him.

It was clumsy and desperate.

His mouth was cold at first, and then hot.

Nathan grabbed the front of the wet jacket and kissed him back hard, with a year of coffee in it, and the man who tasted of rain made a rough noise against his mouth and backed him into the wall.

The hall light shook on its cord.

Bowen's thigh pushed between his, and Nathan's head hit the plaster and he did not care.

Bowen kissed his jaw, then his throat, then his mouth again, slower now.

"Nathan," he said against his lips. "God. Nathan."

It was the first time he had said the name like that.

Nathan's hands slid under the wet jacket.

He felt the heat of Bowen's chest through the damp cotton, the hard slope of his back, and the way his whole body trembled when Nathan's palms went flat against it.
