Chapter 28: The Statement
"Yes," I said. "I'll say it."
She squeezed my hands once, hard, and let go.
On Thursday I stood at the same lectern at Holy Rosary.
The church was full again. Not three hundred this time. More.
Half of 5th Street came, and boys he'd gone to high school with, in borrowed ties.
His mother sat in the front pew on the aisle.
Dom sat three rows behind her, alone, in a black suit. He'd asked her if he could come. She'd said yes.
The coffin was white. There was a photograph on the easel of him at a Royals game, grinning, with a hot dog.
I said his name.
I said it the first time and my voice broke, and I waited, and said it again.
Then I told them about his crown.
How he'd made a joke about his mother the whole time I seated it, a Tuesday morning last October.
How he said "Tell her I do, Doc" through the window of a black car, with a cigarette, the last time I saw him.
His mother laughed out loud at that, in the front pew, through her tears.
